Mark Part 2
Connection
Last time, we noticed as we dipped into Mark’s gospel that it provides the basic shape of the other two longer, synoptic gospels, Matthew and Luke. There are only 24 verses which are found in Mark alone and nowhere else. These verses cover most of them:
Observation
Chapter 4 verses 26 to 29
Chapter 7 verses 32 to 37
Chapter 8 verses 22 to 26
Chapter 14 verses 51 to 52
Any comments?
Remember, we see that no attempt was made in any of the gospels to provide a day-to-day diary of the life of Jesus.The main events to which the reports hurry are focussed upon the climax of the story, the ‘end scenes’ in Jerusalem.Try to capture the enormity of the implications in, for example:
The deeds which spoke volumes:
Chapter 11 verses 1 to 10
Chapter 11 verses 15 to 19
The words which were outrageous:-Chapter 12 verses 1 to 12
The New Covenant – New Passover meal:-Chapter 14 verses 12 to 26
We suggest that you read together your selection of the verses from the arrest in Gethsemane; The Torture; The Trial; The Crucifixion and burial of Jesus; and the bewildered, terrified people who first faced the resurrection of a dead Jesus (Chapter 14 verse 32 to Chapter 16 verse 8). Share with each other what strikes you as you read.
Prayer Preparation
Using Mark Chapter 10 verses 35 to 45 as the basis, discuss the real problems all followers of Jesus have to face with their own self-centered and competitive natures. Then pray …
