May 5th – The Greatest Gift of All

There is one gift over and above all of God’s spiritual gifts, which he INSISTS all Christians must have, and use,and develop. Compared with this gift, all other gifts are hollow and fruitless.
If I can communicate – spell-bindingly – without this gift, I am merely making a noise:
If I have insight of unfathomable understanding – and the power to share it –
If I have the most brilliant mind so that I can out-think the whole academic world:
If my religious faith can move mountain ranges- without this one thing, I have nothing:
If I give away to good causes-everything I own:
If I die as a martyr for my faith:
without this one thing – it’s all useless: an empty shell.
What is this one essential-this greatest gift of all the world? In one word it is LOVE

Without it nothing works. But beware, it is not any old kind of love-like loving a mate, or loving music, or muesli. It is a dynamic spiritual kind of love. We are not born with it. It is so special that the New Testament uses a special word for it, which our English vocabulary doesn’t contain. It is really the self-less love of Jesus, which is being described.
Just as a light passing through a prism splits into the rainbow of colours – so the love of Jesus, passing through the prism of Paul’s mind, splits into the colours which all of us can see. It is when they are all together that they become the white light of love. The greatest thing in the world.
No wonder that I Corinthians,Chapter 13 is possibly the most read chapter in the Bible.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.Love never fails.” I Corinthians 13: 4-8a

A Prayer:
I marvel, Lord, that one day we shall see, and faith will not be needed, one day hope will be realised, and will not be required, but that we enter fully into Love which lasts through all eternity for YOU ARE LOVE.

Now read First Letter of John Chapter 3.
